Sunglasses Guide – What to look for in eye protection

Protect your peepers!

We all know that it is important to wear sunscreen while outdoors to protect our skin from the harmful UV rays of the sun.  We know the damage that can be caused to our skin;  but do you realize it is equally important to protect your eyes?   eye

In fact, the UV exposure from the sun is thought to contribute to many serious eye conditions such as cataracts, and “snow blindness” which is like sunburn damage to the cornea of the eye, pterygium and age-related macular degeneration.

So, what do you look for when you are ready to buy a new pair of sunglasses?  Luckily, the fashion world has embraced the need for eye protection and has encorporated that into their stylish glasses.  Many designers such as Marc Jacobs, Ralph Lauren, Fendi, Chanel, Tom Ford, Michael Korsand more have incorporated UV protection into their sunglasses.

Some tips on what to look for:

1)  Check the label & see what UV protection the glasses offer.  Ideally, they should offer 99%-100% protection.

2)  Wrap-around shades or large glasses give better protection because they fit closer to the head.

3)  Just because the lenses are dark, doesn’t mean they give the best protection.  Check the label.  Typically brown, green and gray lenses tend to give more protection than other colored lenses.

4)  Cost doesn’t matter;  again, check the label.  Just because they are pricey doesn’t mean they have better protection.

5)  Prescription sunglasses can also have UV protection buit it;  ask your optometrist for more information.

6)  Even children should wear sunglasses;  their eyes are just as sensitive as an adult’s.

7)  Wear a hat!  Any type of brim on a hat will help to reduce the harmful rays that will come into contact with your eyes.eyehat
